TCU Winner Honored for Achievement and Union Values
Union Plus recently awarded $300,000 in scholarships to 215 students from 43 unions, including one winner from the Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM). This year’s group of scholarship recipients includes university, college, and trade or technical school students from 38 states. The TCU/IAM winner is:
Tristan Flores of Alvin, Texas. Flores, whose father, Johnny Flores, is a member of TCU/IAM Local 6793, has been awarded a $750 scholarship.
Tristan, who will be a first-generation college student, plans to earn an associate degree in physical science from Alvin [Texas] Community College before transferring to a four-year university. He chose a STEM academic path in eighth grade. Tristan has saved enough money for his first semester’s tuition and plans to further reduce expenses by working and living at home while in community college. His family has been involved in unions and the labor movement for multiple generations, beginning with both of his great-grandfathers. In addition to his father, several uncles and cousins work for the railroad today.
