September 11, 2025 – The following is a statement from TCU/IAM National President Artie Maratea on the impending LIRR strike and misinformation about negotiations:
To date, we have remained relatively silent on the current impasse with Long Island Rail Road, the MTA and Governor Hochul – preferring to continue to work towards an agreement rather than sling mud in the press. That ends today.
After two days of lying and shameful press conferences, we feel the need to set the record straight. The Governor has said they’re bargaining in “good faith,” that the unions refuse to negotiate on these “antiquated” work rules, and that her “hands are tied.”
NONE of that is true.
In fact, if any of that were true, and the Governor and the MTA were so sure that we’re being “greedy” or “unreasonable” in our demands, they would call for a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) and avert a strike. But they haven’t. Why? Because they know our demands are fair and in-line with the rising costs of living in New York and Long Island. It’s time for the Governor and the MTA to put up (and call for a PEB) or shut up.
Governor Hochul is also trying to make this a partisan fight. She’s blaming President Trump. He has had nothing to do with this. She’s blaming Congressional Republicans. Last time I checked, Congressmen Garbarino and LaLota are not at the bargaining table.
The truth is far simpler: Governor Hochul, the MTA and LIRR have not moved an inch at the bargaining table. If they were, we would never have been released from mediation.
Every day, LIRR workers move more than 300,000 riders safely and reliably. They sacrifice weekends, holidays, and family time to keep New York moving. These workers have gone three years without any raises, while short staffing and unsafe conditions push them harder than ever. And yet, the Governor refuses to respect the work they do.
Let’s be clear: TCU does NOT want a strike. We know how devastating that would be for riders, families, and the New York economy. But the responsibility for avoiding that outcome is in the Governor’s hands. By misleading the public and stalling negotiations, she is putting New York on a collision course with a crisis that doesn’t have to happen.
What the Unions are asking for is not extravagant. We are simply asking to keep up with the surrounding economy and the skyrocketing cost of living. Workers in every sector are struggling to make ends meet as rent, groceries, childcare, and utilities climb higher each month due to inflation. LIRR employees deserve wages and benefits that reflect the reality of living and working in New York today.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for fairness, safety, and a contract that reflects the essential role these workers play in this region.
Governor Hochul, please stop the political games and mudslinging, and come to the table ready to bargain honestly.
Until then, we will not negotiate against ourselves and will continue to stand firm together. Our unity is our power, and our fight is just.
