May 2007 —Bernie Reading, supervisor for Amtrak in Lancaster, PA, announced to members of the track crew that they had reached—and soon would pass—a safety milestone of 470 days on the job without injury.  He is seen in the photo at right thanking the crew members for their diligence and continuing efforts to stay safe while Assistant Supervisor Paul Servanski listens.  Both are members of Lodge 5092.

The safety milestone is noteworthy given the nature of the work these crews do: they handle changing out railroad ties, changing out rail, maintaining switches and track and keeping brush and other debris out of the way of the trains.  Both Reading and Servanski are “consummate supervisors,” says International Representative Joe Derillo.
